The Cakewalk
The Cakewalk first became famous as a dance called the "Chalk Line Walk" where African Americans copied the solemn walk of the Seminole Indians in the area. Another origin is slavery before slavery was abolished in the 1800s many slave owners had slaves compete to see who could perform best; the winner got as piece of cake as prize. During the Harlem Renaissance those competitions became popular again.
